iMac internal drive upgrade in Victoria, BC
Apple’s iMac computers are not known to be Do It Yourself (DIY) friendly. Nor do they tend to be a quick and easy job for Apple Computer Technicians.
As an example, in order to replace a Hard Drive in an iMac, you have to remove the front screen.
There are two types of iMac screens, magnetic on the thicker old ones, and glued on the newer thin ones. Both also require the removal of very fine connectors and cables that if done incorrectly, can damage the webcam, or worse yet, the display itself.
In the photos here, we removed an old 3.5” Mechanical Hard Drive (HDD) and replaced it with a faster, more reliable 2.5” Solid State Drive (SSD).
This was made possible by hooking both the drives up in a device referred to as a Hard Driver Docking Station, or Toaster. Then using Software to clone/make an exact copy of the data on the old drive to the new drive. This includes Programs, Mail, Photos, etc exactly how you left them.
We also had to install a mounting bracket to make sure the smaller form factor SSD wasn’t floating around.
